Walk the Duck on Saturday, March 12 at 8 am

Chewacla State Park - Alabama Birding Trails
Join the Opelika Wood Duck Heritage Preserve & Siddique Nature Park for Walk the Duck on March 12 at 8 am! Meet at the Homestead entrance to the park on Waverly Parkway. We’ll walk to the holding pond and into the duck blind for some great viewing of the resident and visiting Wood Duck families. The site is a favorite spot for other bird species as well.

The Opelika Wood Duck Heritage Preserve & Siddique Nature Park is an active wastewater treatment facility and as such may occasionally seem less than pristine. Barry Fleming will be guiding us along and will have a spotting scope handy, giving us all the opportunity to see these beautiful ducks.

Please wear appropriate and comfortable shoes; the trail is primarily unpaved. Binoculars, water and sunscreen will enhance your enjoyment! This is a free event and no registration is required.

Dietician Guided Publix Tour

Dietitians from the Lee County Area will be on site at Publix on East University to lead tours throughout the grocery store on Saturday, February 27. The tours will teach participants how to choose healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables, but also demonstrate how to properly read food and nutrition labels, and provide suggestions for more nutritious substitutions in recipes that can be found throughout the store.  Tour begins at 10 am.

Read Across the Preserve on March 1st from 3:30 until 6 pm

Read Across America
Stop by the Preserve anytime Saturday February 27th – Tuesday March 1st and celebrate Read Across America with us. The celebration starts in the Nature Playground at the Little Free Library. You can pick out a book that looks fun to read from the Little Free Library in the Tree-house. Then grab a preserve map and see if you can find the perfect reading spot! We’ll have specially marked maps that show great spots for reading all over the Preserve. If you aren’t up for a hike, that’s OK. There are lots of places to sit and read in the Nature Playground. Got a little one that can’t sit still? Look for the Story Walk for our younger readers, where you walk to find the next page in the story!

Oh, and if you have any books of your own that you are finished reading you can bring them to leave at the Little Free Library for others to find!

Campfire and Story time begins at the Amphitheater at 3:30 pm March 1st.
