Making Fire Rescue Helicopters

Making Fire Rescue Helicopters:  9am-noon at Home Depot

  • Spend quality time as a family for Safety Day
  • Children can build and paint a Fire Rescue Helicopter
  • FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 - 12 offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety along with instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment.
  • All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement.

Here's what is free for Friday, September 30th, 2011:

8am-10 am: Practice line dancing at the Jan Dempsey Community Art Center. Line dance for fun and exercise. Learn a different dance each week. The most popular line dances are included so that you can dance at parties and other dances. New line dances will be included to match songs of popular country artists. Beginners are always welcome.

9:00am:  Join Auburn Stride Walkers a morning walk.  Walkers will meet at one of our various walking trails weekly. Walks are held at your own pace and distance. Come have fun, make new friends, and walk your way to a healthier lifestyle.  Contact Melissa Weldon at 501-2946 or mweldon@auburnalabama.org to find out where to meet.


10:30am-3pm: Drop in for a game of at the Frank Brown Recreation Center. Get a workout while having fun playing a game of basketball. All games last 12 minutes or 12 points.


1pm-3pm:  Join fellow artists at Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center for Open Studio.  Bring your artwork, art supplies, and ideas and join your artistic peers. This is an encouraging group who will critique your work if asked and share art ideas between ourselves.

5pm-6pm:  Intermediate line dancing is practiced at Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.  Steps patterns will be taught and then reviewed by practicing with appropriate music.


7pm-9pm:  It's Swing Friday! Swing Friday is for those who have some (or no) dance experience and want to practice the East Coast Swing, Charleston, and Lindy Hop. Teaching is informal, but every Friday there will be an hour lesson from 7 –8 p.m. and social dancing from 8 – 9 p.m. You do not have to bring a partner with you. Instruction is provided by Auburn Swing Dance Association.

Free Activities for Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Here's what free for Thursday, September 29th, 2011:

4pm-6pm: Bring the family for Family Recreation time at the Frank Brown Recreation Center. It is a great way for you to enjoy physical activity with your family, including playing racquetball, shooting around in the gym, ping pong, air hockey, table tennis, and foosball, and a fitness room for sixteen and older.

5:30pm-7pm:  Your Craft Projects at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.  Bring whatever project you are working on and enjoy the company of others with similar interests. It is a GREAT opportunity to learn a new craft. Crafts currently demonstrated include knitting, crocheting, smocking, sewing, scrapbooking, needlepoint, cross stitch and more. Children are welcome to share the fun with parents.

6pm-7:30pm:  Enjoy a night of entertainment at Kiesel Park.  It is the perfect setting to listen to the enchanting sounds of local and regional musicians. Bring the family, a picnic supper, your lawn chairs and maybe even the family dog and enjoy a free, relaxing evening under the stars. 

6pm-9pm: Come join the Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club for a weekly duplicate bridge session sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League (ABCL). Participation is open to bridge players of all levels of play. ACBL membership is not required. Session meets at the Frank Brown Recreation Center.

6:30pm-8pm: Salsa Lessons! Come and learn beginning and advanced techniques of the spicy Latin dance. No partner or previous dance experience needed. This class will also include the basics in Merengue and Bachata. Class meets at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.

Auburn Community Orchestra Concert at Kiesel Park on Sunday

Free Dance Classes


Practice Line Dance offered Monday through Friday from 8-10am at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. Line dance for fun and exercise. Learn a different dance each week. The most popular line dances are included so that you can dance at parties and other dances. New line dances will be included to match songs of popular country artists. Beginners are always welcome.
Intermediate Line Dance is offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5-6 pm at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. Have fun with enjoyable exercise in our line dance class. Steps patterns will be taught and then reviewed by practicing with appropriate music. Join us for the Bosa Nova, Jose Quervo, Think it Over, Slappin’Leather, Boot Scootin’ Boogie, You Wanna’ be happy, All Shook up, Toes in the water, Enchantment, Cowboy Cha Cha, Wild Card, Rio, Two Pina Coladas, Metamorphosized, Red Hot Salsa, Bobbie Sue, Cajun Holiday, Elvira, and others.

Lindy Wednesday  is for those who have some dance experience and want to practice the Lindy Hop and possibly other swing dances. Teaching is informal but we will show you the moves. You do not need a partner to attend. Instruction is provided by Auburn University Swing Dance Association.  It is offered Wednesday from 7-9pm at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.

Salsa is offered Thursday from 6:30-8 pm at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.

Auburn Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce its line-up for the Fall Concert Series at Kiesel Park. The series kicks off Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. with a FREE performance by Satin Soul and continues every Thursday evening throughout September and October, weather permitting.

Free Film Screening Tonight at Jule Collins Smith Museum

For Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 at 6 pm:
 
Southern Circuit of Independent Filmmakers provides communities across the South with a tour of highly talented independent filmmakers. It is the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film.

 Come by the Jule Collins Smith Museum for the film screening at 6 pm and for free coffee, dessert and discussion with the filmmaker directly following the film.

Concrete, Steel and Paint: When men in prison join with victims of crime to create a mural about healing, their views on punishment, remorse, and forgiveness collide.

This event is free and open to the public.
